Goals Statement

My main goal in life is to work at a job where I show up everyday and enjoy completing my daily tasks in a way where it does not feel like I am working. I would love a job where every day I am creating new connections while enjoying running a sport/fitness/dance/music program of my own within a school or community centre. Therefore, I enrolled myself in the Bachelor of Physical Education and Coaching Degree (BPEC) at Douglas College. With this Degree, I will be able to get involved in any recreation centre activities, or sport/dancing programs where I can partake, run, facilitate, teach, or manage the program.

As I am finishing the BPEC program at Douglas College, this program has taught me a great deal on how to be an impactful teacher, facilitator, leader, and coach. This Degree allowed me the opportunity to apply the skills and knowledge from the classroom, and into 4 different volunteer placements similar to whatever my desired career will be.

Philosophy Statement

Because I have a vast experience in coaching, facilitating, leading, and teaching amongst many different skill levels and sports such as Soccer, Basketball, Floor Hockey, Volleyball, as well as other activities like teaching Ballroom Dancing and DJing for Social Events (both in club and ball room). I have learned that different teaching styles work only at different skill levels or age groups. Even within a team, no two individuals have the same skill levels. I do treat all my students the same and expect them to adhere to the team goals, values and have the same amount of respect amongst one another. Moreover, I do try to create an environment that is both educational, interesting, and fun.

What I strive to do differently than other instructors is to better incorporate teaching activities that the students can relate to. Everyone has a different personality, therefore, individuals can learn a new skill by relating to their interests. I believe the best teaching style when teaching a new skill is to be a facilitator. This allows me to best get to know my students, build trust in my students, and better allow them to excel at the activity in a fun and safe environment. I want my students to feel comfortable to come up to me and ask questions, or even develop their own ideas and techniques, and not feel judged by me or other class members. These group goals, values, mannerisms, and expectations are best to be set during the first lesson and must be consistent throughout the duration of the season/classes.

Although I do set certain values, mannerisms, and expectations, I do find the best learning experiences come from allowing the students to speak their minds, ask questions and have them try to solve their own problems. By solving their own problems instead of without me solving the issue for them is crucial for other aspects of life and enhances their critical thinking skills.

When creating activities to teach my students a new skill or technique, I do my best to not only teach in a way that is relatable to the students, but I will also add in other skills such as verbal and non-verbal communication, critical thinking, trust, and teamwork. Within my classes, I allow students to make mistakes. My job is to guide them into the right track of solving their own mistakes. This will in turn, make them feel like not giving up when a problem occurs.

Being a teacher/facilitator/coach/leader is integral in an individual's learning. We oversee teaching life skills like trust, respect, communication, teamwork, confidence building, goal setting, all through sport and physical activity. My motive is not to create the best athlete or dancer, but to help shape a great individual no matter their age, or background.

Once I graduate with my BPEC degree 2 years from now, I wish to obtain a job where I can run a sports/dancing program either with a sport and Rec company, or at a Rec Centre. Then, while working for the company or Rec Centre on the side, I wish to start my own program where I incorporate music into a fun filled sport or physical activity at a school, or Rec Centre.
